June is a 30-day month often credited with taking its name from Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage and childbirth — a possible reason June has long been one of the most popular months for weddings in many Western cultures.

June carries real seasonal weight: the Northern Hemisphere’s summer solstice falls in late June, the longest day of the year and the astronomical start of summer, after which daylight hours slowly begin shrinking again. At the very same time, the Southern Hemisphere experiences its winter solstice — the shortest day of the year there — meaning June marks opposite extremes of daylight depending on which hemisphere you’re in.

For much of the Northern Hemisphere, June means the start of summer heat, school terms ending, and long evenings with late sunsets. In the Southern Hemisphere, by contrast, June sits in the coldest stretch of the year. June is also one of four months with 30 days rather than 31, alongside April, September, and November.
